I just made a new email domain. Lets say its homecheese.com. I can recive mail from outside accounts, but where do I direct the outgoing messages to. Is there a spot on my computer or what? Say I want to send a messagew to my friend at fred@yahoo.com. Do I have to run some kind of a dns server or what? Thanks

Not really, the mailserver will query your isp's dns server for the coresponding MX entry for yahoo.com and then negociate an smtp process with their smtp server.

What platform are you using? Microsoft or Linux/Unix? What mailserver are you using?
In Unix systems, type: nslookup -type=mx yahoo.com
the system should be able to get an mx entry (ip of yahoo mailserver)
Also, give more information about what you got in smtp log files.
