Hiya folks. I have attemted to create a vpn tunnel from home to the office. Im using cable modem at home at pppoe dsl at office in bridged mode. I have a Linksys VPN router at the office end and im using SSH VPN Client software from home. I have been successful in connecting the tunnel but im finding it REALLY slow. There is an app i wish to use at home that depends on a database at the office. I have been able to map the drive where the database it without problem. My issue is one of extreme slowness. My ping replies to the host server is approx 88msec. Any thoughts on why i have such a slow repsonse? Is there a better, faster way to access this data drive other than VPN? Thanks in advance..

There is nothing you can do, what VPN stands for (Virtual) meaning it really does not exist. You are at the mercy of he Internet when using any VPN Technology (IPSec or PPTP) . Why? well in very simple, you can be crossing many autonomies systems, one why to make things better you can use a major carrier vpn services like sprint, att.. etc you will be under one single AS..

Sorry... Using SSH IPsec. The app im trying to use allows you to setup its database on a networked drive and then when you open the program it must access that drive. It is so slow its nearly unusable... I have been searching and searching and trying to learn but im at wits end at this point... Thanks for ANY help or suggestions.. OH also, if i install SSH on my Toshiba laptop.. i lose all wireless capabilities..havent figured that prob out either yet..

If this is just normal for VPN than I cannot see how this is a viable option for anything. When i say SLOW i mean SLOW.. Its not usable at this speed. What other options are there for me to have a remote server setup?

I would use RDP, setup a computer on the backbone with XP Pro and use RDP . (Remote Desktop Protocol) like using PCAnywhere... you would vpn into your network like you always do and then execute RDP , it's like using your computer at work, but from home

The problem is that (assuming you're using ADSL broadband) at any point when data transfer is occurring one end of the connection (server or client) will only be able to upload at 256K maximum, and that's assuming nothing else is using the connection at the same time.

If you are doing database stuff, you need to make sure that you have a client-server database setup and then optimise your database for VPN by making sure that the client is using pass-through queries and this sort of thing.

I've managed to get Microsoft Access working quite well across a PPTP connection using XP Pro as a client and an NT4 server. Bearing in mind all of that is Microsoft stuff that's pretty amazing!!!

If you want to chat about this in more detail then email or call me directly on 07721 074073.
