well basically I got a new computer the other day, and my upload/download speed is really poor. i still have the same connection, 2mb broadband with BT. i took a test as well to test out my up/down speed and it came out with "Your download speed : 172 kbps or 21.5 KB/sec.
That is 87.6% worse than an average user on btcentralplus.com". well, its fine browsing the net but playing games and downloading is awful. the computer is in the same room as my old one, my wireless card is a belkin g+ (up to 125mbps). i dont know why its doing this, im sorry if i havent given enough info also, i dont know much about networking and connection stuff.

172 Kbs is very very slow, hardly faster than IDSN. Phone BT and ask them to do a line test and while you are at it, find out how far away you are from your exchange.
In fact you can do that here. Enter your post code and it will tell you have far you are from your nearest exchange as the crow flies. Bear in mind that telephone lines don't fly like a crow, they go round corners, so the overall distance will be longer but it will give you some idea. If the distance is approaching 3 Kms that will be part of the problem. You can also do a speed test here.
All BT ADSL broadband is now Rate Adaptive up to 8Mbs. If you are getting a lot less it means that you have either a bad line or you are to far away from the exchange to go much faster
Stuart

thank you for the reply, i appreciate the help.
well, i went on that site and it says "You are around 1.15 kilometres from your exchange (as the crow flies).", is that good or what? but the thing is, my old computer never lagged and had normal/fast up/downloads for my connection. that is what i dont get.. i cant see any possible reason
