I have an unusual problem with a workstation that slows performance once the network cable is plugged in. It is slow in accessing everything, i.e if i try to open a word document from floppy it takes 2 mins. once i unplug the cable the pc performs at optimum speed. I have tried anti - virus scan, spyware, tried updating NIC drivers, replaced the NIC, swapped cables, network points, unable to locate the problem. Is there anything i missed as to prevent a rebuild?

First, I would delete any invalid network drives. (I've seen disconnected or invalid network shares--due to password changes or a server dying--make the File Save and Open dialogs act really slow.)
If internet access is also slow, I might check NIC duplex settings in the device manager.

Lol, don don't worry about it. It's a good tool for anyone to have in there toolbox.
Try this:
unplug the ethernet, open Task Manager, plug the cable in and see if any processes spike on their CPU usage or memory usage.
