I recently bought a router to connect my new laptop and my desktop pcs. For the first week everything ran smooth. Now on my laptop which is connected wirelessly , im experiencing really slow internet. My desktop pc is working fine. I thought it might be someone else sharing my network, but i made sure that my connection is security enabled. So i ruled that one out. Is there thing it can be?

Wired solutions tend to use less resources than wireless. The encryption may be causing this. Try going back to wired. To be sure setup perfmon and see if it is the system or network.
Also other devices and electromagnetic sources may also cause slow and poor transmissions even if you see high signals. You'd need special tools to see all those signals.
See also wireshark.
Be sure firewall is up to date. If router has firewall features turn them on too. Get a good hosts file.
"Best Practices", Event viewer, host file, perfmon, antivirus, anti-spyware, Live CD's, backups, are in my top 10
