Hello,
I seem to be having a horrible time with my D-Link DI-704P ,(brown case) Router. After fighting with my Cable ISP for a week I finally got my IP address working and I assumed I could forget I had a router. Maybe in a perfect world, but not for me. I have an internet connection now, but the speed drops to about 18 kbps from a high of 400 kbps on BOTH PC’s. I can’t seem to figure out why? Here is my very BASIC set up.
I have a Samsung InfoRanger Cable modem hooked to a D-Link DI-704 Router. They are attached to a P3 / 500 and a Duron 800 both with 256 RAM and running XP Pro. There is a 50 foot CAT5 Cable running from the Router to the other PC. Everyone wants to blame the CAT5 cable, but I’ve been assured by my local PC store that the cable is working! Here are a few of the suggestions I have tried.
I have moved the cable modem away from the speakers, I have switched the Duron’s NIC from Automatic to 10BaseT Half Duplex, (the other was on 10BaseT Half Duplex anyway) I have changed the 50 foot CAT5 cord twice. I have switched the smaller cords running from the Router and the modems. I have tried running just ONE PC from the Router and the speed still drops to around 14.4 speed.
Here are just a few Questions that I have a feeling that I might get asked. I’ve been reading these forms for the past 2 weeks and I have a feeling I know how they work.
• My cable connection is Broadband
• I can ping an outside IP address a few times, but sometimes I am timed out
• I haven’t upgraded my Firmware version 2.56 build 20. D-link says ,”If it isn’t broken don’t fix it”. It’s not 100% broken, so I don’t know?
• The first PC works GREAT without the Router. I can D/L an MP3 in 30 seconds
• I haven’t changed ANY of the Routers factory settings. Thanks
Mike

I have the same gateway (upgrade flash) and have no such problems. You must also remember that the rate is not only your end but the providers also. You may be able to stream pretty fluently, but the provider may be strapped for bandwidth.
Heck, nvidia's website is terribly slow for downloading drivers.
If you are truely worried about performance go to places like bandwidthplace.com or dslreports.com and test/tweak your connection.
Upgrade your flash!
