Comment:

im confused as to which way round the port and slot is described on a router

for example, there's a cisco 3661 router in our london office with the following configured to connect other offices together with what im assuming would be leased lines:

1/0
1/1
1/2
1/3
2/0
2/1
2/2
2/3
3/0
3/1

does this mean:

slot number/port number

or

port number/slot number

aaaahhhhhhh!!!!!!! help!

Slot / Port is the correct description.

This can be confirmed by any of cisco's on-line documentation at http://www.cisco.com .

the best thing you can do is look on Cisco web site and read TFM. Cisco has the best technical reference resource i've ever seen, easy to find information and as detailed as most ppl need.

Cisco labels most (I've used only the 2500/2600/3600/10000 series so I can't say everything else) of the ports by Interface/Number/Sub:VirtualNumber

Some cisco's are modular, you can plug in a different module as per your requirements. This would be the 1/x 2/x etc

If your module has say 2 serial or ethernet interfaces than this is x/0 x/1 x/2 etc

So lets say you have an ethernet module with 2 interfaces you'd configure

int e1/0
int e1/1

Now if you want 2 IP addresses assigned to e1/0 than you could do: int e1/0:xxxx
This is a virtual interface and IOS12, last time I looked, supported this.

it has been quite some time since I've played with routers but I'm sure my memory passed the CRC test on this one.
