Just recently I've begun to lose speed on my wireless connection in my house. Router is a d-link di524, wireless adapter for my laptop is a netgear wg111. Just a few days ago my speeds on the laptop ranged from 12-48 mbps--but the last couple of days I've been connected at either 1 mbps or "no signal," yet somehow it is still connected. The adapter's software detects the signal at 59-60% yet the speed is terrible (the max speed is 54.0 mbps).

I've been using Windows to connect bc I can detect the network as available with Netgear's software, but I can't connect to it. Using Windows has worked out fine until recently (for a while I had 802.1 auth. checked but now I know better).

Anyone have any ideas what's going on? Ahy help would be appreciated!

Anyone else connecting into your wireless network? ;-) That would explain 60% signal strength, but poor bandwidth.

Did you secure your wireless network?

set your router to not auto detect signal speed, force it at 54mbps...if you have 50-60% signal strength then forcing it should fix your problem..

Thanks for responding!

Heropsycho--my brother also uses the wireless connection, but we both get about 1 mbps steadily. Maybe I'm just greedy--after all my computer is a floor above the router and his is a floor below, so maybe this is the best we can do. And the network is 128 bit WEP encrypted.

Josh--I'm hesitant to change settings on my router anymore because it seems with my limited knowledge I do more harm than good. But there were two settings that seemed like they might be the one you were talking about:
1) link speed--options were 10, 100 or 10/100 mbps auto
2) TX rate (transmit?)--options were 11 or 54 mbps or auto
Which one sounds best to change?

Oh and if anyone out there knows if I'm just expecting too much let me know! Thanks so much for everything so far. Kate

You're not being too greedy.

Try changing the channel of the router.

Ok I'll try that. Right now it's on channel 1.

Aren't channels 1, 6, and 11 supposed to be the fastest because they're for g devices? My adapter is compatible with g, and I know I've used it on all three of those channels with no change, but I'll see if using another channel improves things tomorrow.

Thanks!
