Comment: Hello, In our network we have 3 switches stacked together. A 3300 and 2 1100's should we have them share an IP address for SNMP sake. Or should each be assigned their own IP addresses? THanks, Omar Haque

Reply: (edit)How are they connected ? I have 2 3300s and the first has an IP, I'm sure, but I have just added the second and didn't bother, it just works. Mine are connected with a matrix cable. This will give you a throughput of 1 GB between the switches. I will look it up tomorrow if I can see 48 ports or only 24. But anyhow, it works!

Reply: (edit)the main reason a switch has an IP address is so you can telnet or web into it to see status and manage it. As Mike said above, if you can see and manage the other switches from the one that has an IP, then they don't need one.

Reply: (edit)It also depends what management software you use. Some packages allow you to manage the entire stack (regardless of how many there are), and some will only allow you to manage one. Your best bet is whatever solution suits your needs. If you need to manage all 3, and the software won't do it for you, then you'll need to assign IP's. Keep in mind, some switches also have web servers built in for management, so on the switches you have that aren't assigned IP's, you might want to turn that off. HTH, Chase
