Specs: Windows XP

I have a wireless router connected to my cable modem. I've run an ethernet cable from this wireless router to another room in the house because I cannot get a good wireless signal. I have 2 computers in this other room which I want to connect using the ethernet cable. Should I use a router or a switch? Which would be faster?

wired is always faster than wireless
switch is cheaper than a wireless router.

You need a switch (or a hub if they still make them - switch is better). There is no routing involved so you don't need a router.

FYI, they don't.

I found one here for only $149.99 - a steal at the price!

(OP - Ignore this. It's a joke! A switch will cost you in the region of $20.)

That's got to be an old old web page.

If you look at the face of the hub in that image, you'll see an uplink switch on it too next to port 4. I suspect this would make port 4 the only port usable as an uplink port.

Nowadays all uplink ports are auto-MDIX so an uplink switch is never seen anymore either. Not to mention the fact that on most modern switches you're not restricted to a single uplink port, any port on the switch can be used for an uplink.

I actually have a working 8 port hub sitting in a box somewhere in my office at home. It was the first network device I ever purchased. If memory serves me, I bought it around 1996 and paid about $150 for it..........and if I'm not mistaken, it was only 10 Mbps.....lol

Oh how times have changed!

I'm not sure if the page is old or not - it's what's currently showing. I remember those hubs - used to use loads of them. As you say just 4 outlets, the other being the uplink. And someone pressing that button was a constant cause of "The network's down".

They certainly didn't cost $149.99 back then.

(or a hub if they still make them - switch is better) <- hope that wasnt a proper suggestion

hubs should never be used now they an old technology that have no advantages and a tonne of reasons not to use them. in fact if you see one just bin it and replace with a switch.

one reason is hubs can only work at 10Mb half duplex and thats shared between all the devices. factor in the collisons and youll never get 10Mb

all text needs typos. There there for the reader to find,to distract them from the total lack of content.
google it! wasnt the answer to the question i asked so dont be dense and give me that repl

Wow, ijack, that link you posted really brought back memories! My first experience with setting up a home network involved a Netgear starter kit which included that hub (along with two NICs and CAT5 cables). I used it to network two PCs thru ICS (and I know it didn't cost $149.99!).
