Sharing internet from my computer to wireless

October 9, 2010 at 07:43:39
Specs: Windows 7
I get my internet through my 3G cellphone via USB. I want to share it wirelessly. I picked up an older Linksys router (WRT54G), to try it. But I can't get it to share the internet through the router. I am running Windows 7. I don't know if I'm missing something, or if I just need newer, or different equipment, or if I am just dreaming too big.

If there is network adapter on computer, you can enable Internet Connection Sharing on that 3G connection, after that connect computer's network adapter to other computer to share Internet. Check out this Internet Connection Sharing tutorial to get more info.

If you want to connect more computers by using that Linksys router, you need to use it as network switch only. Try to turn on the Linksys router, and connect computers to router's LAN port, think it will work.

Hope this helps.

What I am trying to do is distribute the internet connection coming into my desktop via cellphone-modem (USB) wirelessly. The biggest thing I want to do is connect to the internet on my iPod Touch through WiFi. I don't have a DSL modem. I don't think I just want to use the router as a switch for LAN ports. Essently I want the internet to flow through my computer and out the router, to make a wireless hotspot without a DSL or cable modem.

I've enabled Internet Connection Sharing on my dial-up, but I cannot get the wireless router to access it.

Try this:

Log on to wireless router's configuration page, configure following settings: LAN and wireless settings.

LAN settings:
IP address 192.168.0.254 with netmask 255.255.255.0 (if you use XP/Vista on that computer with 3G)
IP address 192.168.137.254 with netmask 255.255.255.0 (if you use Win7 on that computer with 3G)

Wireless settings:
Assigning the mode, SSID, wireless channel, SSID broadcast and other settings as according to your needs.

After that enable Internet Connection Sharing on dial-up connection, connect this computer to router's LAN port with network cable. Finally test to connect wireless by using other computer/wireless device (need to configure to obtain IP address automatically).

This is an example to configure wireless router as access point, can use as reference.

Hope this helps.
