Sharing internet betwwen Vista and XP?

Specs: Windows Vista
I'm trying to link my dads computer to mine via crossover cable to share the internet. Once theyre connected, my computer(vista) shows an "internet gateway device" which it never did before so my computer sees the connection.

My dads computer(XP) also sees the connection but gives me the common "limited or no connectivity blah blah ip address assignment." By that it means no.

Both computers are set up to 'share the internet' and I have created a new broadband connection on my dads computer...

Could it be that the automatically assigned IP's are different between the two versions of windows? I'm only looking for his computer to share the internet via mine, not file sharing or anything. I've gone over lots of walkthrough and how-tos, but it doesnt want to go xD
