Subject: Sharing DSL connection w/home LAN...
|
Comment: I'm in the middle of getting DSL for my home. I have a small LAN w/2 computers always connected and room for a few more (including a laptop occasionally plugged into it). My DSL provider is going to be giving my a static IP address to use. They're also providing a DSL modem/gateway (Telocity is the provider I'm going to use) that can be plugged into a USB port, a NIC or a serical port. I want to share the DSL connection with any PC's on the LAN. I was told that to do this with ICS and would need to install another NIC in the main PC (so that it had two NICs), one with the static IP adress and one with an ICS address (or something like that). What is the best way, under these circumstances, to share the connection? Can I use the USB interface and still share the connection and use the static IP address? I'm a bit confused on this subject. Any help would be great. Thanks.

Reply: (edit)I'm at Qwest.net DSL Technician. Honestly, using ICS with a DSL connection wastes my customers time and money. The best way to do what you want is to setup the computers through a hub. Of course it would require a DSL router instead of a modem. We use either the Cisco 675 of 678 for routing, or the Intel 2100, 2200, 3200 for modems. I have my customers setup each computer with a specified internal IP address. Haven't had a problem yet.

Reply: (edit)Netgear and Multitech have great Routers for DSL modem sharing as well. I just set one up using Multitech's Routfinder. The only trick when setting it up is setting the DNS up. I had to use the ISP's DNS addresses to connect using the name in the URL box. Otherwise if you knew the IP address of where you needed to go it would connect.
