This is totally hypothetical. I am wanting to know if a person can take an existing DSL connection from the DSL modem (all hypothetical)some how connect it to other computers and share files and the DSL connection with only a router. (or do I need a hub?)

Also I need a good resource site that actually explains this. Most networking sites COMPLETELY neglect this subject of DSL and sharing files from comp to comp.

Thanks.

To share files, you need to have a network. A network can be made on several ways. One of this is with a hub/switch (switch is the most modern way of doing this). This also is the easiest way.
If you want a good site with information about this, I think you need to loog at a search engine and then search for: "network hub utp nic". A nic is a Network Interface Card wich must be present and installed in every pc in the network. UTP is the cable you should use.

Sharing your internet connection. To do this you need a router, or a program with a routing function for your Windows machine. I wouldn't recommend you the last option.
In a router there is possibly a build-in hub. So if you buy a router with build-in hub it's easy to make your network.

Plug the DSL connection cable in the WAN router port.
Plug the cables of your other pc's in the hub of your router.
Simply install tcp/ip, file- and print sharing in Windows and you are running.
Now you can share resources, such as printers, drives, but also directories.

I hope this is what you need.

So if I want to share files and share a DSL/Cable connection. I really should get a router with a built in hub? If this is the case, is all of the above going to take place over the same ethernet cable from PC to PC?

Thanks.
