It should work. From another machine, click start, run, type
\\ or whatever the IP of the machine that has the shared drive and press enter. The drive should show in the shares. Make sure file sharing is enabled first.

Or, you can type the computer name like this: \\computername\D$

"So won’t you give this man his wings
What a shame
To have to beg you to see
We’re not all the same
What a shame" - Shinedown

Well no, you can't just type the computer name like that.

You'd have to use backslashes before the computername, like in guapo's example:

But even then, this would only let administrators see the D drive. D$ is an "administrative share". So share the drive, call the share name D, and

will work.

Also, make sure you have allowed file and print sharing in the Windows Firewall, or whatever firewall you are using.

That's correct. Actually, nothing should be after the \\computer name or the \\IP address if it's just for workgroup user access.

If you know the share name (e.g. D) you can put that after the \\computername. Otherwise you'll just see a list of shares.
