i am trying to set-up my first VPN. the OS on my server is 2K server. server is connected to a linksys 8-port 10/100 Cable/DSL Router which connects to a Cisco cable modem with static IP. i assigned the linksys with the public static IP and then assigned my server with a private static IP from the linksys router. i have internet and intranet connectivity.
the question is when i try to VPN to the server from a remote site i get and error saying that the VPN computer is deneying access. i have read the manuel for the linksys and does not really say what has to be set-up in it and dont know if the linksys is deneying me access or if it is the server. i set-up an admin name and password so i could get in but deneys access.
what settings are required by the linksys and are there other settings in the server that need to be changed to allow VPN access.
i sure hope that someone has tried or run in to this that can help....
thanks in advance to all...

Adam, you've undoubtedly received my email. I'm posting it for the benefit (ha!) of those who may be in the same/similar position:
I don't have any experience with the Linksys on the VPN server side. I use my Linksys on the client PC. I can tell you that it wouldn't allow me to connect until I upgraded the firmware for the router. Go to Linksys and make sure you have the latest firmware. It's an easy install. There was an issue with their routers filtering PPPoE and PPtP (?) protocol, which has since been resolved.
Since I'm using W2K Pro (and not server), I was forced to use a hardware VPN server (the SnapGear router). Instead of using a Linksys as a router (and your W2K Server PC as the VPN server) like you're doing, my Snapgear router is the actual VPN server. This way, no PC has to be running to connect (although that defeats the purpose). Take a look at Snapgear.com - they have an excellent manual that describes how their VPN works. It was the first time I found anything in layman's terms that I could grasp. The article is found at:
http://www.snapgear.com/download/pub/snapgear/documentation/SnapGearUserManual.pdf
You may be able to glean some knowledge from this article and use it to get your system up and running. First thing I would check, though, is your firmware. Here's what I found on their page:
Click ftp://ftp.linksys.com/pub/befsr41/befsr81-fw2402.zip to download the latest released firmware (version 2.40.2) for the BEFSR81 router. After extracting the files, please read the README.DOC file for upgrade instructions.
This firmware is ONLY for use with the BEFSR81I'm pretty sure yours is the BEFSR81, if it's the 8-port router.
Good luck, and let me know if you're able to get it up and running!
Eric...
