I just got remote desktop to work between two of my home computers. I can login using my 192.168.1.x ip addresses between either computer. Both are running XP Pro. This obviously won't work when one of my computers leaves the network. I'd like to be able to connect into one of my computers outside of this so I'm trying to set up a VPN. I went to www.whatismyip.com to find out my actual router ip address and then tried using that to connect to the other computer but that doesn't work. How do I do this correctly?

That shows how to set up remote desktop. It does not show how to set up VPN

I followed all the steps to setup a VPN but it still doesn't work. Even the 192.168.1.x ip address won't let me VPN even though I use the same thing for remote desktop

There are many types of VPN's. A VPN acts like a wire between two computers, even though it may go halfway around the world through many switches and routers. To get a VPN to connect you have to open ports along the path in both directions. You may have to nat/pat the connection to the computers involved. In some cases the tunnel might not work because of a few issues.

Might need to (well, you do need to) tell us more about what type of vpn you are trying to establish.

Hi,

Otherwise you can easily access your systems through some NATing configuration in ADSL Router with that same private IP address. This one is very simple. This is like accessing web server from remote location.

And you can log in to your system through some remote tools like VNC Client Server tool... with that static IP from remote location .
