Wondering if it is possible to connect a printer directly to a wired LAN using a USB to CAT5E adapter (If such an adapter even exists)?

Easier to use a Print Server !!!
USB needs a host and client to connect, therefore whilst the printer would be a client, where in a LAN is a HOST device ??

Yes, you need a print server. You cannot just plug a printer into an Ethernet network and expect it to work. You can get a print server with USB inputs but a USB to Ethernet by itself will never work.
The only other way do it is to connect the printer to a PC via USB or parallel and have the PC act as host.

A Jet Direct box would work as well.

Go out and get like a netgear print server , mine has exactly what you were asking a USB on one side and a rj45 100 meg port on the other though they are a little pricier than you might think, think it was like $50-60 when i got it , but it works great.
