setting up LAN on 98

I am Having problems with the setting up of a LAN in 98 im setting it between to identical systems, but i cant see them in the network neighborhood, can anyone tell me why? please help i need to set this up, so i can use one as a gatway to the interent

Can you be a bit more descriptive of your physical setup? What router do you have? Are the PCs close together?

they are windows 98, they both have network cards, in the building there are sockets for the lan, so i have been told plug them in and it should work but no luck?

You will have to find out what is connected at the other end of the LAN sockets, switch, router, or not connected.
