I have cable internet access, and I would like to know what I would need to do in order to have my computer (Windows 98 SE) act as a dial-in server so a friend of mine, who uses a dial-up modem, can connect to the internet through my cable connection by dialing up my computer telephone line, and connecting to my dial-up modem and accessing the internet from there. I guess what I am asking for is how to setup a one line dial-up server that allows the caller to access the internet from my computer. Can this be done using the "Dial-up Networking Server" in Windows? I would appreciate it if someone could please explain how I can do this. Or at least tell me what I need. Thanks.

You would need to enable Dial Up Networking and set the PC up as a server so it can accept calls. I've never tried a scenario like this myself so I can't verify that it will share the internet with the client but I can't see any reason why it wouldn't.

I just wonder why your friend can't get a dialup account with an ISP. It would be a lot simpler and would not affect your bandwidth.

I enabled the Windows "Dial-up Networking Server" on my PC, and I had my friend dial-up to my computer. He connected fine, but he is unable to use the internet. How can I fix this?

Does the client pc use a static ip or does the server assign one (dhcp), if its static that may be the problem, but in any case a proxy server, although not the best way, will make it work. I use proxy+ (search download.com) in shareware mode and with a dialup, it is just as fast as being on the same computer. Because i still only dial i cannot try this method but basically when someone dials in, and if they have the right ip and ports configured it "should" work fine. Oh and to change the way the ip stuff for the client pc is configured, check out the properties of the connection(in xp) goto Tcp/ip...and change anystatic stuff to dhcp or automatically assign, Also try bridging the dialup to the ethernet, that might work, i forgot how to so i'm no help there but thats just an idea
