I posted this in the wrong forum: Ok so a router firewall is better than just software firewall, but I have not been able to find out how to properly set it up. I have a D-Link DI-524 and have tried to find out how to configure it. Even on their web site it is difficult to understand proper configuration of the router as a firewall. Can someone shed light on this and specifically the D-Link Router or point to a site that simplifies setting it properly? Also is it correct that you only have to set it up on the base machine, other computers on the network are protected. Is that right? TIA for you help.

If that model is anything like my DI-604 you connect to the configuration manager via your web browser. Your manual will tell you the correct address to use.

The firewall should be setup by default and enabled and will protect all PC's behind it. All you have to do is make sure you're getting your IP address from your ISP and then ensure you have DHCP enabled with a scope defined. Ensure you have your PC set to get it's IP automatically.

That should be all you need to do.

Typically, a D-Link router will use 192.168.0.1 as its IP address. Per CurtR's instructions, you would open your web browser; enter http://192.168.0.1 in the address window. That should bring you to a logon screen for the router. The router's instruction sheet will give you the username and password (again, D-Link usually has "admin" for the username, and no password). Once logged in, you can set up the router to work with your system. Go into the "Help" files once inside if you have configuration questions.

Curt R Please expand on "ensure you have DHCP enabled with a scope defined." What is the Scope? I appreciate your help as well as najitech's.

Continued to Curt: Specifically these settings:
DHCP Server Enabled Disabled
Starting IP Address 192 . 168 . 0 .
Ending IP Address 192 . 168 . 0 .
Lease Time 1 Hour 2 Hours 3 Hours 1 Day 2 Days 3 Days 1 Week

Static DHCP
Static DHCP is used to allow DHCP server to assign same IP address to specific MAC address.
Enabled Disabled
Name
IP 192 . 168 . 0 .
MAC Address - - - - -

How do I set them properly?
