We just got a new laptop with a free wireless router. It's a D-Link DI-524 router. I read the instructions and configured it with the default settings and restarted. It didn't give me any instructions to configure my laptop for it to connect to. Then after I restarted, my internet didn't work on either computer. I have AOL if you want to know. Should I do any other configuring?

Orangutang:

The Appendix of the quick install guide (can be downloaded here: http://www.dlink.com/products/support.asp?pid=316&pv=64&sec=0 if you do not have it)has instructions on how to configure the wireless setup on your laptop.

Is your laptop getting an IP address from the router? The IP should start with 192.168.0. You can use the ipconfig command to check, or in a browser enter http://192.168.0.1. If it takes you to the router setup screen and you are using the wireless connection than you have proper connectivity across the wireless connection to the router. Something is setup wrong with the router to Internet connection/setup.

Thank goodness.

Ok, sorry about that.

AOL needs to be setup to use the broadband connection. It has special settings.

Refer to AOL's help. It's a little tricky.

Look for info on setting up broadband.

There is a default Home and then there is the default broadband.

And not all routers support AOL's brand of broadband.

Do some research on the AOL site or your router's site to see if they list AOL as being one of the systems they support.

You were right. I don't think D-Link routers are very compatible with AOL Broadband. I bought a LinkSys like AOL's demonstration had and it worked.

Good for you. No thanks to AOL.
