Hi, the question I am about to ask may sound absurd but I know very little on this subject. I'm wishing to set up a wireless internet connection from my cable modem to my centrino laptop, hopefully by connecting an access point to the cable modem to provide the wireless link. I actually had this up and running after a fashion, but then started to prat about with WEP settings and stuff which promptly nailed the lid on the coffin of my wireless link. I reset the access point to undo all my muddling and since then I cant get it working again. I cant even seem to actually log into the access point settings page (which allows you to alter the WEP and stuff) even tho my laptop can detect the wireless connection. I think my problem lies in assigning correct IP addresses to my access point, are they meant to be the same as that of my internet connection or the one that the network card of my laptop gives itself. I have tried changing these to no avail. My wireless network assigns itself an address of 169.254.xxx.xxx when I ask it to repair itself, which I've read is an indication of some kind of problem. It also asks me to contact my internet supplier (NTL) as it couldn't renew the IP address. I have wasted a lot of time on this and am ready to chuck the lot in the bin! Incidently, I'm using a Sitecom access point which the chap who sold it to me (from a reputable high st retailer) said was what I needed to connect directly to the modem and obtain the internet on my centrino PC. Seeing as I've managed it once I know he wasn't lying! Can anyone help?

Sounds like you may have to update the firmware for the access point. Go to the www.sitecom.com website and download the version 3.30 firmware update from their support site. Install the WIRELESS_LAN_UTILITY and connect to the access point via the ethernet port. Upload and install the latest firmware with the WIRELESS_LAN_UTILITY. The 169.254.x.x ip address you are getting means that the wireless interface is set to use DHCP and the DHCP server is unavailable. If you are using Win XP you may also try resetting the TCP-IP stack on your computer by going to a command prompt and typing "netsh int ip reset C:\reset.log". this resets the TCP-IP stack.

Thanks for your comments, I've still not had any luck with the thing. I'm gonna probably go with another manufacturer and hope that their user manual is of better use than mere toilet paper.
