I have setup networks before but I've always used a router. I've never setup a network before with only two comps and a crossover cable. One machine is Win98 SE and the other is WinXP Pro. What protocols do I need? What do I need to do? Basically I'm just trying to share files right now, I don't need internet sharing. Thanks, -Forward5

well dear

it is very simple

first you have to arrange cross cables

two lans cards with the drivers , install the lan cards in both the machine

then right click on the network neighbour hood go to properties again set the tcp/ip properties assign the ip address to each machine with unique ip adrress ..

join the computer with cross cable ping the machine ..

any problem write to me

Thank you Pankaj, I appreciate your help. So basically I don't have to do anything different at all when networking via cross-over cables then when networking through a router? All I have to do is assign IP addys (like 192.168.0.1 for the first computer and 192.168.0.2 for the second computer)? How about the fact that one computer is running XP Pro and the other is running 98 SE? Aren't I going to have to do something so that they can see each other? Because we all know that 98 SE (or regular 98, or ME) and XP Pro don't really like each other very much when it comes to networking. Well, thanks again for the help! -Forward5

One more thing, both the computers sould be in the same workgroup and subnet mask and don't forget to enable FILE AND PRINT SHARING on 98(U can locate this in network neighbourhood properties).

Take Care

http://www.helmig.com

- all flavours of M$ OS networking.

- a mirror site in effect of the above - but with all graphic info displayed; it does not appear to include XP - yet.

Any/all of these should help you set it up OK. Saves picking the way thru it all here; and you have a few on-line resources for reference too?

Keep installed protcols to a minimum.

Please help to make the Win XP Home (my new machine) and Win 95 to communicate ( I need to transfer the files from the old computer to the new one). I cannot use the XP Networking wizard setup disk on Win95. Having followed the instructions of Pankaj I did get anywhere (I created a new connection in XP, changed IP address, same subnet mask, same workgroup, did the same in Win 95 . What am I doing wrong or what am I not doing?

Check out the links to tutorials posted in #5 just above.

Also be aware the '95 install NetBeui as the default protocol; '98/W2K/XP install tcp/ip.

M$ do not support NetBeui for XP, but it is there on the CD; can be installed; does work.

As you're new to networking(?) wise to keep it simple(?) - installing/using NetBeui in XP is a 'little involved' - you have to find it on the CD and install it to the correct locations - first. Perhaps install tcp/ip to your '95 system (again it's already there for XP - or should be), and remove Netbeui.

The minimum 'kit/hardware' you need is a NIC in each PC, a cat-5 UTP cross-over cable between the NICs (you do not need hub for a 2 PC system); software you already have in each OS. How to set that up is (in the links in #5) just above.

Also when you install the NICs: if using a PCI NIC in either system (almost certainly you will be in the XP system), do NOT install it the PCI slot immediately adjacent/next to the AGP slot (if it's n use). The AGP slot and the adjacent PCI slot share the saem IRQ; so a NIC just 'won't' if installed next to an active APG; have at least one slot between them. The problem does not arise obviously with ISA based NICs.

One other option - if you do not manange to get a simple LAN working...

Install the '95 drive in the XP PC (as a Slave) and transfer files that way. You will have to reset jumpers on XP Master to be Master with Slave (at present it's probably single Master - no Slave?), and '95 drive to be a Slave. Once all files transferred, reset XP drive to be as before - after removing '95 drive. Also remember to reset '95 drive jumpers be as was originally.

If you're using cable-select on the XP PC then post back; things will be slightly different.
