hi,
ive got 4 labtops and 1 printer. Im trying to set it up so that i can print anything from any one of the labtops on my 1 printer. Right now i've got a wired 4 port router (by linksys) and a print hub (also by linksys).
I've got it set up as follows: An ethernet cable running from each labtop into the router. from the router, an ethernet cable going into the printer hub, and from the printer hub, a USB going into the printer.
For the life of me i cannot figure out what the problem is. I've got the printer set up on all 4 computers, so they all recognize it's there, its just that whenever i send something into the print que it just sits there as 'pending'.
any help would be greatly appreciated. this has been driving me crazy!!!
first off, thanks for your time and your response :)
yeah, ive got a linksys print server (PSUS4) and a linksys wired router. should i be able to use just the print server to get the results im looking for?
and is it even possible to set up 1 printer on 4 different labtops without going through some sort of massive network?
The problem that steigrafx was pointing ouot is that you are connecting 4 laptops and the print server (5 devices) into a 4-port router. How is that possible? the router should have 4 LAN ports and one WAN port. the WAN port is for connecting to a modem - not for a device on your network. According to the description of that print server, it also has a 4-port switch. So you should attach the print server and up to 3 other devices to your router. The rest should plug into the print server's switch.
So, assuming you have everything connected correctly now, if you are still having problems I'm guessing that the problem is due to the printer trying to get some sort of response back from the computer. If the printer is bi-directional it expects to receive data as well as be able to send data back to the PC (show ink levels etc.). But, in network printing sending data back to the PCs can be problematic. See page 39 of your manual for more info. If the printer is send back some sort of dialog awaiting a response the fact that you are not getting that dialog would explain why the jobs sit in the queue.
I haven't used a Print Server like that before, but you might need to give the printer an IP address. Once again, I've never used something like that, so don't know if it will work, but give it a shot.
Did the PS come with a CD that needs to be installed on all the laptops?
