I am wondering if anyone knows hot to get the service packs for nt now that windows is no longer hosting anything for nt. I am looking for service pack 6 high encryption. for some reason my nt installation installed in high encryption, and I am not sure why. I have a copy of sp6 but it wont install and says ' nt is installed in high encpryption 128bit and this version of service pack 6 is for standard encryption only.' if anyone knows how to remedy this or has a copy of sp6 high encryption or knows where to get it please let me know;

Thanks in advance.

Start the Service Pack 6a file with the parameter -x to extract it.
E.g.
sp6i386.exe -x

You should be asked on where to store the extracted files. So give it a folder e.g. NT4SP6a and extract the file.
When finished, goto your folder which contains the extracted files. Change to the update folder.
Find a file named update.inf.
Open update.inf with an text editor like notepad.
Search for "schannel". Second time you found "schannel", remark the line by adding a semicolon ; at the beginning of that line.
(Above that line there is a line like this "[CheckSecurity.System32.files]", so you know that it's the correct entry)
So the changed line looks like this:
;SCHANNEL.DLL

The changed entry avoid checking the version of SCHANNEL.DLL, that's all it does.

Save the file.
Now you can start the installation of SP6a by doubleclick at the file update.exe in the same folder.

Please send a reply, if you solved the problem !!!

You could do all that.. or you could just download the proper high encryption service pack found here http://www.download.com/Microsoft-Windows-NT-4-0-Service-Pack-6a-Intel-x86-with-High-Encryption/3000-2098_4-10033928.html

Hope that helps.. if you have any more questions don't hesitate.

Hey thanks again for taking the time to answer my inquiry. 1st I looked at the link the second person sent me and it took me to cnet where it appeared to have the download, I was so happy, then when I clicked on it to download, it took me to the windows site where they have some nt downloads but not that one. thanks anyway, if you fins anywhere else to get this let me know.

Now I am going to try the previous fix which was installing the sp6 that I already have and have it skip checking which version, etc. My only question is, how do I start the service pack with the parameter -x, do I use the start, run and type in spi386.exe -x. if so then I will do that. let me know so I dont screw it up. thanks again very much

Yes, you can do this by Start / run.

You can also open a CMD command prompt, goto the drive an folder, where your service pack is stored and type in the command right there.

so I started the process listed above using the command prompt and did exactly what you said . resaved the file and started the update and got the same message stating I couldnt install a standard encryption service pack on an high encryption version of NT.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks for your help nonetheless

Ah, sorry.
You have to make 2 other changes in the update.inf file.
As described, you changed the entry for Schannel.dll by making a semicolon (;) infront of it.
There are 2 other entries, you have to add a semicolon at the beginning.
;Security.dll
;Ntlmssps.dll

Save the file and try again.

In the Microsofts Knowledge Base, there is another solution listed.
You can simply go into the Windows folder and rename the file Schannel.dll to Schannel.dlx.
Then install the Service Pack.
When installation finished successfully and PC has restarted, goto the windows folder and rename the file Schannel.dlx back to Schannel.dll.

Did you also tried to restart first, when renaming the file \WinNT\Schannel.dll to \WinNT\Schannel.dlx?
After restart, check, whether the file is still renamed.
