Hi everyone. I'm new here and I have a few questions. I hope you can help me by answering them. Ok, I'll get to the point.

I have a firm with 76 computers ranging from 486’s to Pentium 4’s. I am considering to install a network for all these computer. Does anyone know how much it would cost to do this? I just need a quick estimate. I am also considering installing a server-client network.

2. Can you also tell me the Components,Hardware, and software needed for this operation.

3. The difference between server based and peer-to-peer networks

4. Security of installing a server-client network.

Thank you.

It depend on several points. Does computer already has Network interface card?. Cabling may vary from an office to another. Impossible to give a pricing without more details! It should cost between $5000 and $10K

Concerning the client-server application... There is different pricing for each vendor, but you didnt specify what software you need.

Peer-to-peer network, is when anybody share stuff on their computer. A more secure and decent way is to centralized data on a server.

As per your message, it seem that needs are not defined at all. No planning, no policy

If you don't know the difference between a peer-peer and server based network... DO NOT install the network yourself.

about the software, what software is there to choose from? I've already provided you with the number of computer to be connected, and they range from 486's to Pent.4

Another thing, what are some security issues I should be concerned with if I choose to install a server-client network?

The question is not "what software?", but should be "what is your needs?".

Do you need an accounting system, manufacturing system, MRP, ERP, engineering,... Search for software vendor. Each products has different security issues and use different technology.

How many offices do you have, what is your budget and IT policies.

This almost sounds like a homework assignment. Not to be insulting, but by what you've provided, even the roughest estimate wouldn't be possible. From the details you've provided, my advice would be to contract the job out. 76 computers; where are they in relation to each other? CPUs were listed, but no mention of OS.
