Server is the name of machine that is sharing the folder.

I like long walks, especially when they are taken by people who annoy me.

When mapping the shared drives, you will need to look up the name of the server (each of the 3 should have a different name) Then you would type \\server1\share, \\server2\share, \\server3\share.

If you are using windows you can go to the computer name tab under my computer properties (right click) to get here to see that you are adding the correct server share name. Also make sure your networking options are all setup, folders are shared, and the security is setup correctly.

Good luck!

Dan

Now that you have told me about server name what is the share name. I suspect that it is anything I want.

The reason I am trying to get everything straight in my head is that I am helping out at my lodge. They have three computers on a network (I don't know what kind of network) that they would like to be able to pass files back and forth. Also one of the computers has a large external drive that is not used. I want to use it to backup all the computers. Hence I want, ultimately, to have drive sharing.
The computer names are now "LousComputer", "Bill1234567" and "Juliesbaby". I want to change these names to "One', "Two" and "Three". HOWEVER, I am afraid this might screw up the only drive that is shared.

Will changing a computer name at START....CONTROL PANEL.... SYSTEM also change it throughout the network?

Am I correct that setting up the sharing and mapping of drives is to do the sharing first and then the mapping.

I wish all the shared/mapped drives to appear in "MY COMPUTER' on each computer.

Hope I have been clear,
Bill

"Will changing a computer name at START....CONTROL PANEL.... SYSTEM also change it throughout the network?" Yes. Of course you can name the shares anything you want.

"Am I correct that setting up the sharing and mapping of drives is to do the sharing first and then the mapping." Yes. You can't map a share that doesn't exist.

If you want all the shares to show up for each user on each computer, then you'll have to run a script at startup that maps them.

Life's more painless for the brainless.

Jennifer,
Re: Your last paragraph about a script to map.

I seem to remember some time ago that the computers at the lodge. (Before installing new computers) would connect the mapped drives at startup. They may have had scripts but I did not know. It seems to me I remember a check box or something that (when checked) would connect at logon. Does this replace the script?
If not what would the script look like and how do a implement it at startup?
