Comment: Hi, I know this question has probably been asked many times but I have not found a good answer. I have a Windows 2000 Advanced Server AD with 9 Windows 98 clients. The clients can see other computers in Network Neighborhood but the server is the only one that cannot see them in My Network Places. The server can ping all the computers and can even search and find all the clients. Only after a search, can the server access the clients hard drives. One final question, one of the clients has Windows XP Home Edition. Is that the worst operating system to have for a network environment? Should I just upgrade all clients to Windows 2000 Proffessional instead? Thankyou

Reply: (edit)I think you'd find you have a much better network if you upgraded to 2000 or XP Pro. XP home cannnot join a domain, and 98 clients don't make very good AD clients. Once you've upgraded to 2000 or XP pro you'll be able to fully take advantage of active directory, group policies etc, and everything will "play nice" with each other.

Reply: (edit)Absolutely upgrade to Windows 2k. It is a far superior network OS to 98 or XP HE. It will also fix your first problem. Someone correct me if I am wrong, I think the reason your 2k server can not see the 98 machines is because it is quering DNS for the host name. You need to configure the 98 machines to use dynamic dns updates by installin the DSClient on them. There may be some other things that need to be done as well, like I think you need to set up a dns proxy to update dns on behalf of the win 9x machines, i'd check microsoft's site for more info. The reason the 98 machines can all see each other is because they use netbios instead of dns to do name resolution. Sorry for the vagueness of the reply, but this should get you started in the right direction. Perhaps someone else could expand on what I have written...... MWF

Reply: (edit)Thanks alot. I'll start troubleshooting those areas. Let me also add that I am using a router to access the Internet but the WIndows 2000 Adv Server is supplying the network with DHCP instead of the router. Thanks again
