I have an older PC which I want to get some mp3's off of and put them on my newer one. Though I don't know how I can just set up a temp. network. The older PC is a Compaq Presario 7598 with windows 98 second edition the Newer Computer is a Hp 750n with windows XP Pro. Both have ethernet cards. I do not have internet that goes VIA ethernet. I have dial up. I have and ethernet cord coming from the Hp ethernet card into the ethernet card of the Compaq. Please tell me how to do file sharing this way.

All you need is a crossover cable to connect the NIC's on the two PC's. Make note of that "crossover cable".
Once you have that, edit the TCP/IP Properties of both NIC's and give one the IP address of 192.168.0.1 with subnet mask 255.255.255.0 and the second PC IP address of 192.168.0.2 and the same subnet mask. For the 98 client to connect to shares on the XP box you will likely have to create a user account on the XP machine for the 98. Use the exact same username/password you use when booting the 98 machine. Then, share a folder on each, make sure on the XP box the 98 client account has access to the share.
have you ever opened a compaq, much easier to network then have to open a compaq plus an hp, I know how to open them but if your not educated in hp's and compaq's then it is a chore
