Hi , does anybody knows how do i scan the open ports and which app is using each port on win2k server?
as there any utility that comes with the windows that can do that?

You must be AT the 2k server. Open a command prompt and type "netstat -a" without quotes. To scan a remote or LAN machine try IP Tools>> http://www.ks-soft.net/ip-tools.eng/
DO NOT go scanning about the net like a madman or you will get the attention of a real hacker and probably get in yourself trouble. Use this tool responsibly.

Curt, don't you think that a so called "hacker" would know how to port scan already?

And port scanning is not ALWAYS related to "hacking".

I've got another question related to this:
After you've run the netstat -a command. Is there a way to shut off or close these ports from intruding hackers? Also, does anyone know of a good web site that explains the functions of specific ports (example: 8080,1080, or 21) and if it's ok to close them off from the outside world?
