Subject: SBC dsl problems with setting up...OS: win98 SECPU/Ram: p3/128MB |
Comment: I just bought linksys's etherfast cable/dsl firewall router and I am having much trouble in setting it up. Almost every time I hook up the router to the modem, and setting it to pppoe, the modem can't connect to the isp. Then I have to restart the modem by hooking it back up to my computer. The only other change I've seen so far is when I change the modem's configuration to pppoe on computer and then the router connects to the server. But when that happens it is already signed in when I boot up, something I don't want, and I can't even access a bunch of websites or the modem. I am really sick of this and if anyone could help, or would like me to explain further, I'd appreciated it.

Reply: (edit)Using a router with broadband keeps your connection on all the time. The router will have a "connect on demand" option which will allow it to auto disconnect. Then, when you open Internet Explorer or some other program that uses the internet, it connects. I'm not sure why having it connect when your computer boots is a problem? That's the point of a router, you don't have mess with connecting and disconnecting, just open internet explorer and go!

Reply: (edit)Well I'm still in the mindset of dial up where signing in is the key to getting a connection, but I'm starting to see how this works. Today I got the router to connect ot the pppoe server but the problem is that, past going to google and linksys, I can't open any other sites. When I was trying to get to www.download.com, among other sites, and everytime the site won't load. I don't understand what is wrong, does it have to do with the firewall settings or anything? Thanks in advance for any help.

Reply: (edit)I've noticed that ever since I got DSL, Internet Explorer hasn't been working because it expects a direct dial-up connection using a modem and I have no choice but to click on the "work offline" button since I no longet use a modem. Netscape Navigator doesn't have that problem. How do I get Internet Explorer to realize I have DSL and to connect through DSL? Thank you.
