A certain filesharing program (bitTorrent) saturates my bandwidth and severely slows down my browsing speed and any other computer on my network. How can i limit this and allow the other computers to access the internet at decent speeds?

I do that too, but i'd like to leave it up all the time...I want to be able to download when i sleep and not worry about my roommates (who stay up until 5AM every night and want to use the internet) We pay for our own ISP even though we are provided with one. The one my apartment provides is royally worthless.

Check the settings in the apps you're trying for download speed and upload speed. You should be able to tell it you can send at 4k/sec (for example) and download at full speed. Then you're still sharing files with people, but not using much of your bandwidth. I do this on my cable connection, which gives about 45-50k/sec out, but I limit it to 4 or 5k, so I don't notice it running at all. We have 4 computers sharing the connection and never have bandwidth problems. :)
