Hello community,
I too have a Satellite 1730 with no discernable network adapter, ACCORDING TO XP SP1. I know that it's there, I can see it right next to the phoneline jack. The device just doesn't appear in Device Manager. There are no Unknown (or Other) Devices in the Device Manager.
I try to force the driver installation, but XP tells me that there is no such device installed in this laptop and cannot continue with the installation.
I have done a BIOS reflash to version 1.30, and there are still no settings of any kind in relation to LAN - no mention of LAN or Network at all in the BIOS/CMOS setup!
I had to do a BIOS flash because when the laptop was given to me, the BIOS was passworded; no password cracks, manufacturer-passwords or other workarounds gave any results.
The picture in the 1730's User Guide showing the rear of the laptop is incorrect! It shows an allocated space next to the modem-jack where the ethernet port would be - my 1730 HAS the factory ethernet port installed, and it IS connected to the motherboard (I've dismantled this laptop 3 times already - for various reasons).
A theory I've got is that I'm trying to install a device that WinXP Service Pack 1 isn't configured to search for, but maybe a later Critical Update or Service Pack has addressed this issue(?)(as was the case with my 8.1 audio on a Giga-Byte motherboard I built in a desktop PC). I would really like to not resort to installing Service Pack 2 (or 3, or Vista - have done so before, REALLY don't like them), and I'm not altogether that sure that the 700MHz CPU and 64MB RAM would really cut-the-mustard with these updates.
If anyone can shed some light on this issue, I'd be very grateful. Maybe there's a Micro$oft Knowledge Base that I've missed that addresses this very issue(?)
Many thanks in advance,
K1

64 Mbs of RAM doesn't cut the mustard with ANY version of Windows XP. The memory requirements for SP2 are not different than for the original Windows XP.
Having only SP1 there are over 100 critical updates that you wont have. That alone could be a cause for concern.
I would get SP2 installed but first make sure you are free of spy-ware and viruses and any other malware which is what causes problems with SP2.
