Hello.
I don’t know much about networks and how they work so I use wrong terms and such I apologize. Okay so I recently brought a router for my two desktops and a laptop. My goal is of course to connect all them together on the same network- so they all have internet.
One PC is connecting directly to the router the other PC and laptop are connecting by a USB adapter- we switch the adapter between them. The PC that is connected to the internet directly always seems to work. I believe that all the hardware is installed correctly on all machines because it claims that it is connected to the internet on both the PC and laptop.
Both laptop and network connect to the internet for about 10 seconds assuming that they are the only computer trying to connect to the internet and then the PC crashes- blue screen- non-equal…. The laptop says it has limited or no connection- it has no connection.
When I try to repair the connection it says acquiring network address though it never really does acquire it on the other PC or laptop.
The PC that always works has a router IP of 192.168.1.2, subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 and a default gateway of 192.168.1.1. Now the only way I can get the laptop or other PC to work is by disconnecting the PC that is connected directly to the router. Then I can get either computer to work but then the IP address are the same as the PC that is connected directly to the router. Then when I try to connect the PC that is connected directly to the router the PC crashes and the laptop internet connection is limited or none again.
All settings are set to automatic- I tried to manually type in settings and that led to disaster. All computers have integrated LAN- so that should not be an issue. I have looked in this forum and other palces for information- but none seemed to help me so I posted my own. So I figure that I am missing something that is pretty critical but I don’t know what it is. Any help would save me much time. Thanks in advance for any input.

ok. a couple of questions
1. the USB adapters, are they for wired or wireless connections?

2. In the router, how many IP's do you have the router handing out for DHCP?? If it is just one, then you need to change that...

3. you said by setting in static IP's that led to disaster, what happened?

4. What is the make/model of your router and USB connector??

Thanks a lot.
1. Yes they are wired for wireless I think- you take the USB adapter out and place in to another computer (where drivers are installed) and it works fine.
2. This I believe is the issue- now how do you change how many IPs the router hands out though DHCP- I do believe it is just one- but I am not sure- where to cheek that??
3. Maybe disaster was an overstatement- it didn't work- it was no longer trying to aquire an IP- but the internet was not working still.

Ok
You will have to log into the router via Internet Explorer - you will need to know the IP of the router
To find that out, you need to go to
Start>Run>cmd Press enter
and the command prompt type in: ipconfig and press enter
the gateway should be your router
Type the IP of the gateway into your IE browser and log into the router
You may have to poke around netgears website to find where the DHCP server settings are, but normally they are under setup, or LAN

yup!

So I looked into a bit more and figured out the IP is not the same on the PC or laptop as the computer that is connected directly to the router. (I was able to view this for about 10 seconds before the PC crashed)
The IP for the PC or laptop which ever one is connected at the time is 192.168.1.3 while the default gateway is the same 192.168.1.1 on both computers.
Does this help? DHCP is enabled automatically on both computers. Is the router still only handing out on IP?
Thanks...

i would still log into the router and check the DHCP settings just to double check
they will be under LAN settings
post back your DHCP settings, leases and all, if you can take a snapshot of the screen and post it here or email it to me so i can take a looksie...i beleive the snapshot is Shift + PrintScreen button

yup!

Also if the USB device is a Wireless NIC, what is your setup on your wireless end on your router? does your rotuer have remote managment? If the USB device is wireless, is it picking up your SSID?

yup!

Thanks once again.
Allright so I got the laptop to work- it only runs at 54mbs though it is supposed to run 108mbs- but that is a different issue.
Using the all the same settings on the 'wireless' PC with the apdater- it still crashes- so now I am thinking there is something wrong with the custom built PC when I put it together?? (When I put in the USB port- the system typically makes one beep sound- mine makes a few- good bad??) Anything in BIOS? In windows?? Should I reinstall it again?
Also when you click on view wireless networks- it does not find any? Is that good bad??
(If you would like a screen shoot and think it would help tell me- but not that the laptop works... I think it is PC issue now)

if the PC is rebooting right away when you put in the USB NIC, i would check your BIOS and turn on USB legacy support

yup!

The PC goes though a few flash screens- loads up K8V-X mobo screen- flashes-flashes again- and then one more time- then Windows loads. Does this mean anything?
When it crashes it says driver unequal_less_equal
The legacy support is set to Auto- which means it only works when a USB device is in the port- I set it to enabled and I will see if that makes any difference. Thanks for your help.

try getting an updated driver for the PC (for the USB device, and for your USB itself)
If you go into your registry (Start>Run>regedit and press enter) and navigate to 'Hkey_local_machine/system/currentcontrolset/control/crashcontrol in there you will find a 'AutoReboot' with a value of 1, change that value to 0 and exit your registry, then plug in the USB device and write down the stop error you are getting and post it or email it to me

yup!

My 'auto reboot' value was already zero so it says...
DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
(other stuff)
PCC_PFW.sys Address B77632A3 base at B775B000 Date stamp 3e81940c
Stop 0X000000D1(0X00(all zero), 0X0000002, 0X0(all zero), 0XB7BA02A3

It says the same thing every time if that helps. Thanks if you can make any sense of the data...

Possible solution here:

http://www.vladd44.com/other/irq_error.php

I seem to recall having this problem once and moving the NIC to another slot fixed it.
