Getting BB to work properly with Sweex router:

I got broadband with a free modem. The thing is I wanted to share the connection between PCs (not with ICS) and it was a single user modem which could not be conncted to a router, so I got a Router-ADSL modem (Sweex ADSL Annex A)

I got the net working through it. But not everything's ok, far from it. Certain sites won't load,(i can't get to hotmail, change settings on sites where i have to post, such as faceparty, and MSN Messenger doesnt work properly, it's hit and miss whether anything i type gets through to the person i'm talking to - generally most sites where i have to upload/post information fail) and upload tests on BroadBand speed test sites fail everytime, so i'm guessing i have an upload problem? But I wouldn't have a clue what could be wrong or how to fix it. Also, i ran a program called port detective. When it had scanned the ports i chose - these were ports:
21
23
25
80
110
443

it came up with the results saying:

Port 21 - FTP - Open
Port 23 - Telnet - blocked
Port 25 - SMTP
Port 80 - HTTP - Open
Port 110 - POP3 - blocked
Port 443 - HTTPS - blocked (surely this is why hotmail doesn't load?)

However, when i dialed up using my old 56K dial up connection, i ran the same test and the results were:

Port 21 - FTP - Open
Port 23 - Telnet - blocked
Port 25 - SMTP - open
Port 80 - HTTP - Open
Port 110 - POP3 - open
Port 443 - HTTPS - open

The router manual seems far too complicated for a beginner, I don't actually know what I have to do to fix this problem, but it must be a router configuration problem surely or else why would the ports all be fine when using dial up? It would help if the manual was in proper English, but it's one of those which is completely unhelpful - things such as for example "IGMP - this option enables or disables the IGMP" which means nothing without explaining it. Are there any special settings I need to change? And can anyone explain (better than the dodgy manual!) what all the NAT and port forwarding stuff (called Virtual servers on this router) means in the configuration?

In short, downloading works fine - uploading (FTP, posting)
does not. Hotmail and other HTTPS sites also do not load.

Any help on this MUCH appreciated, i'm pulling my hair out, i've tried looking for help on this but without much luck and I do need to sort it out. I don't intend on getting another router as this is the 3rd I have purchased in less than a week! Anyway hope someone can point me in the right direction - i need to read my Hotmail!

Cheers,

Alex

set the mtu on the router to manual and change it to 1452, let me know if that helps.

Thanks for the replies, firstly my ISP is Tesco (UK) - yeah sounds dodgy but it's clearly not an ISP problem, because everything works absolutely perfectly when using the supplied single-user modem. And most things work ok when using the router apart from being able to upload properly, get to secure sites and talk on MSN.

I set the MTU to 1452, but it has had no effect on this. Any more ideas?

Thanks!

What exactly is a single user modem? does it have a rj 45 connection? Sounds like they configure that modem to work on their system.
