Subject: router works wireless not wiredOS: xp SP2CPU/Ram: 1.6/768 MBModel/Manufacturer: Dell |
Comment: I use a Netgear WPN824 to access ADSL (Bellsouth). The DSL modem only goes to the 824 router. The router connects wirelessly to a laptop but I can not connect via a wired connection to a desktop with a fresh XP SP2 image. Here is what I have found 1)From the desktop I do ipconfig and see an IP has been assigned to the hardwired desktop 2)from the laptop I go to the 824 router and look at connected devices. The desktop does NOT show there. 3)The desktop is set to use IP assigned by Bellsouth and DNS from OpenDNS 4)The desktop shows an active LAN connection icon at 100 Mbs 5)The desktop has a fresh image of XP SP2. No software or changes have been made. Previously, I was able to access the network wirelessly from the desktop but I wanted to change to a faster and more stable wired connection. Can anyone give me any direction? Aaron

Reply: (edit) What kind of address did it assign ? If its a 169.x.x.x address then it did not come from the router , if the address was assigned from the router it would be a 192.168.x.x address . The desktop nic should not have any address assigned to it and should be setup to get its addres from dhcp . The router itself is the one pulling an address from bellsouth . The router will then assign you a dhcp address in the 192.168.x.x range , if the desktop has an address in this range you should be able to ping the router . Also on your machine make sure your FW is opened up to allow this range in and out .
