Hello all,

Is it possible to use a Linksys wireless B router BEFW11S4 as a wireless adapter without any modem or internet access at a remote site about 300 feet away. It will be used on a desktop machine with a NIC.

Any help or info would be greatly appreciated.

You kinda of can if your other router is the same model than you could do something that is called bridging the two routers togther. But im not sure if you can use it as a full wireless adapter per say. But you also would still have to use a ethernet cable to plug in the router.

~ Truth is out there~

I'm still lost as to exactly what you are connecting to what and wanting what to do what.

As it is you only have two things mentioned.

A computer with a nic can connect to a common home/soho router if the router has also an ethernet connection. If the router also has radio then any other radio device's could connect to the radio and also if you set it up the wired portion of the lan.

A wireless connection is for the most part the same as a wired connection.

the answer is no you can not. A wireless bridge is a completely different animal than a wireless router. Google wireless bridge and you will see what I mean.

Thank guys for the info.

What I was attempting to do is avoid having to purchase an adapter for a remote desktop machine at a senior center dining room about 300 feet from my apartment.

Since I now have the wireless router working with my DSL I am attempting to connect from the remote point since they have another Linksys router, given as a gift to the senior center, by of one of the residents.

The machine at the dinning room is a Compaq PII (I think 400 mhz) with a NIC installed and I was wanting to connect the Linksys Router with a CAT5 cable only. After configuring my own I could not see how to configure it without DSL access and since there is no phone service at the dinning room there can be no DSL even if we could find someone to foot the bill which is pretty unlikely.

As I suspected I will NOT be able to use the broadband router in place of an adapter.

I guess we will have to purchase a desktop ISA or USB adapter for the remote desktop machine.

Do you have a suggestion as to which would have a better range, if there is a choice?

I was trying to get out of the $ for it as you probably surmised.

Thanks for the advise. I appreciate all of you taking the time to help me out.

You should buy the adapter from the same manufacturer as the router and the same level of bandwidth which would be a wireless b usb adapter.

Hi wanderer,

Thanks for the advice about the same mfg. I'll look for a bargain Linksys - B USB adapter.

Thanks again for your advice.
