Router slows down internet speeds?

This is my third router because the other two were both claimed to be defective by Linksys. This router is having the same problem as the other two so I highly doubt it's defective I just believe its a setting or configuration that I'm overlooking that's causing this problem. The problem is that whenever the router is connected to the network the efficiency of my internet goes down by 80%(about), then from whenever I'm directly connected to the modem. Everything is wired, and there is no wireless setting on the router. A lot of forums praise the router I am using. Another thing to throw off troubleshooting, this problem just started happening. The network used to be hooked up with the old router in the same fashion and worked fine, when one day all internet speed went to crap. That's when I called Linksys with my first router and they dubbed it defective. I need help, a second look at the problem may be the solution.

Forgive me if this is stating the obvious but have you tried different cables between modem/router/PC?

I have switched out the old cables with new ones, that was my first step to trying to solve this problem.

Also try to use other ports on the router, see whether it helps..

Are you using a combination of straight (Patch) cable & Crossover Cables? Some routers/switches will auto-configure their ports to suit any cable but others do not have that functionality. I believe a power reboot may be necessary if you switch from one cable type to another.
Summary: It's actually not a real mystery why routers slow down the internet connection. Routers examine incoming data packets then switch them to the proper outgoing port. Any time you have a decision makin...

Summary: A 10/100 router connected by CAT 5e wiring to each PC will give you up to 100Mbps on each port so the router itself won't slow down either connection to the Internet but it still feeds into a 2.5Mbps ...
