I am connecting two computers to my broadband cable connection through my Linksys 4-port wired/wireless router. Every so often my internet ceases to respond, which I assume is due to my ISP. This is quickly fixed with a quick tap of the reset button on the router. The external IP remains the same, but the IP addresses of the individual computers on the network always changes. I have several ports open and forwarded to one of the computers. Each time this happens I have to run ipconfig from the dos prompt, log in to the router settings, and manually edit the address of the computer to which the ports are forwarded. This has been nothing but a nuisance until now. I will be leaving for a few weeks, and would like to leave my computer open for remote administration and FTP. In the case that the internet conks out (which it almost certainly will during the six weeks I will be away), I will have someone at home to reset the router whenever it is required, but they do not know how to reset the ports, and therefore I will not be able to access my computer remotely. I am awaiting a reply from my ISP about this problem, but nevertheless am curious as to whether or not there is some way to create a batch file or a program that would automatically detect the new internal IP address of the computer, and change the router settings accordingly? Any input is welcome.

No need to go to all that trouble. Just go into the network settings for your computer and give it a static IP instead of getting a dynamic IP from the router. Then the IP address of the computer will not change when the router resets.

You can use either static dhcp, where the dhcp server assigns the same IP address to the same mac address, or you can set the IP static (just make sure it's outside of the dynamically assigned IP addresses).

Your problem might not be the router. Log-in to it when your internet stops, and try having it renew its IP address. Check your splitters and make sure they are quality splitters. Instead of hitting the reset button the router, just unplug it for a second, then plug it back in.

Thank you all for the quick response. This all sounds like good advice, but unfortunately I don't know how to either: 1) Give my computer a static IP address, or 2) Use a static DHCP server. Might I bother anyone for explanations on how to do this?

Go to your network connections (in the control panel) right click on your LAN and hit properties, then there should be a little white box with some things in it, one of them should say:

"internet protocol(tcp/ip)"

click on that and go to its properties. There you should see that you have obtain and ip address automatically enabled. Theres a button underneath that saying to use the following IP adress click on it. Thats where you will input your info for the static IP, just make sure you have all the right info.

Hope that helped
