I have a linksys router with 4 ports. I have hooked up my XP laptop directly to the cable modem, and it receives an IP address and is able to get onto the internet. But when I plug in the router, the status shows that it has received no IP address or DNS server or gateway. I have tried using the renew button but it still doesn't receive an IP address.

One other thing I am having problems with... the house has two rooms that are wired with Ethernet. They both come into the router room. When I hook up any computer, the router assigns it an IP correctly. But as soon as I hook in the connection that goes to the bedroom the router goes nuts. I am no longer able to access it and it gives out IP addresses starting at 10.0.1.1 . Once I take this connection out; however, the router starts working fine and reassigns default 192.168.1 addresses. There is no computer hooked up in the bedroom. It is only the wire that leads there.

Thanks for any assistance.

Wire to the bedroom is wire wrong and creating a short would be the only reason I can think of for that behaviour.

The renew button will only work if you configured the router correctly. Doesn't sound like the wan port is setup like your laptop is.

Consult the manual for this unit and review the wan port settings compared to the laptop.

Hmm thanks got the room working right, and as for the router... it fixed itself. I unpluged it (for the 15 th time) and plugged back in, and it decided to get the IP.
