ok so i got comcast 8mb service, and a darn nice computer. i also have a linksys router. now when playing games, can i host games with my router hooked up? so far i havent been able too but i want to. ive also noticed my speeds decreasing as opposed to having it connected straight into my modem. is there anyway to make it so i can host games with my router hooked up, and keep my same speed? there is another computer hooked up to the router but i unplug it just incase. ive tried going into my router settings but it asks for a password and i dont recall ever putting one, nor what it is. any suggestions?

You'll likely have to find out what port the games are on and then forward the port (in the router) to the PC hosting the game in order to allow external users to connect to the game.

There could be several things affecting your speed. One is the internet itself. During peak usage times, you'll likely notice your speeds slowing down. Another thing that can cause slower speeds is the number of hops between you and whatever it is you're connecting to. Also, check with your provider. Chances are your upload speed is a lot less than your download speed. As for hosting games via your router, as I said above, you'll have to utilize "port forwarding" to allow remote connections.

Check the manual that came with the router. If you haven't set a password, likely the default is a blank password. Depending on the brand of router, it may have a default password. Again, the setup guide or manual that came with it should tell you.

Is one supposed to read the manuals ?
I think so, otherwise the initials RTFM wouldn't have coined.

Not sure of the actual question. All devices must slow the network to some extent. Even wirespeed is not that fast when we look at national or worldwide access.
