Hi there,

I have recently got cable broadband. There are 3 of us sharing the connection through a Belkin 4 port router. The other 2 computers (Macs) connect fine but my PC is having problems. If I reboot the modem and router I can connect fine. But if I reboot my PC I cannot connect again until I reboot the modem and router once more.

I have noticed that when my PC is off the lights on the router and my network card are still on as if the PC was on.

Extra info: wake on LAN is disabled as is the XP firewall (in case of conflict with the router's firewall).

The ISP uses dynamic IP addresses so we all have DHCP enabled. We can all successfully connect at the same time (assuming I started as I have to reset the modem/router). The other 2 computers can connect normally.

I have just done a clean install (from Win ME to XP) and the problem is identical.

Before rebooting the modem/router I cannot access the router at all but if I unplug the network cable XP informs me a cable has been unplugged (so it can "see" the connection that I can't use).

Any ideas? It seems very strange to me...

Cheers

maybe your computer is losing the ip address that your router assigned to it. From time to time, I lose the connection, and can't access the router because my ip is no longer in the same ip range as my router. When I renew the ip address, I can then access the router and go on the internet.

Yeah, I'll look at this tonight when I get home (I'm in UK). The thing is it systematically will not connect every time I reboot my PC.

I'm sure it is an IP address problem. Thing is I'm not sure how to make my PC release the IP address systematically... there must be a way. I guess there is a conflict between the network card's IP address that it must store when my PC is off (the card's lights are still on) and the IP address the router tries to assign the PC when I power up the PC.

Thanks.

Just in case anyone is interested :-/

It was a faulty NIC spamming the router with packets when i powered back on my PC. New NIC... problem solved :)
