I just got DSL for my home. I have 2 computers and 1 DSL modem. My friend has an extra modem that he will give me. Can I have two dsl modems in one home or do i need a router to connect both computers? and if 2 modems are ok can both computers be online at the same time?

Thank You

You'll need to get those answers from your ISP. I'm guessing that you can have multiple DSL modems on one line, but, of course, you'll be paying monthly for the additional service. Expect it would be cheaper in the long run to just get a router, and have more flexibility anyhow.

You cannot connect two modems to the same DSL connection, they will interfere with each other.

The best way to share an Internet connection is with a router. If your modem(s) are USB then you would be best buying a router with a built in modem as there are very few routers that will accept a USB modem.

If your modem(s) are Ethernet then you will have a wider choice. Having said that, the price difference between a router with modem and a router without is so small that you might as well get a router with built in modem anyway and save having something else to plug in.

Home routers normally have a built in 4 port switch as well so you can connect up to four computers without buying any more hardware and have everything combined in one box.

If you already have a modem, you can share your internet connection.

Here, one PC will have to act as a server, where you can connect the modem and install an Internet Sharing sofwtare like WinGate. This PC will have to be on at all times else the other machine will not be able to browse the net.

This procedure is quite effective but cumbersome - getting yourself a DSL router is a better choice as you will not need to have this PC on at all times and you will have very few trouble shooting problems.
