Router only works with Cat5 patch cable

I have a Linksys EtherFast 4-Port Cable/DSL Router with a Cable modem plugged into the WAN port and 4 Win98 pc's plugged into the 1-4 ports. I made up and ran 4 75ft UTP CAT5 cables(in the attic on my stomach) to the pc's. I could not access the internet. I then ran 100ft CAT5e patch cables to the pc's and internet access worked. I triple checked the modular connector crimps on the CAT5 cables and ohmed them out with a meter. They matched the patch cable patterns exactly. Can anyone tell me what the hell is going on? Is this a wire gauge problem? Thanks...

Are you using a cross over cable from your Routers WAN port to your cable modem? Did you make these cables yourself?

Yes there is a crossover cable between WAN port and modem. I made up the CAT5 cables that don't work using Belden CAT5 350Mhz UTP. I have been making up my own cables for years and have never seen this problem before.

use straight-through cabling between the modem and WAN port. for home applications, you really only need a crossover cable for back-to-back NIC connections.
I assume you ran four 75' cables and not a 475ft cable, right? Otherwise, sphinx is right, CAT5 no specified to go that long without a repeater or two inbetween
