Subject: Router IP keep changingOS: win xpCPU/Ram: P4 512mb |
Comment: I am using a D-Link 504 to link up my intranet and internet with fixed ip from the ISP. The default ip for router is 192.168.0.1 and with DHCP, all my intranet pcs are assigned an IP of 192.168.0.2 or 3, etc. With static IP defined using PPPoA login. The network and internet works fine. But after a certain period, the router IP changed to other IP (dynamic IP following ISP IP range - 218.xx.xx.xxx), since the range changed, I am not able to connect to my router and all computers failed to use internet. We have to unplug the router power cable and replug it in then everything works fine again. But after certain minutes, it "recurs". I have disble the "auto refresh", but also the same. Anyone can help? Thank you.

Reply: (edit)It appears that you ISP is asigning you a Dynamic IP address while you have set up your router for a Static IP address. Forget about the 192.168.x.x addresses. These are private addresses applicable to your LAN that you have absolute and complete control over. Its the 218.x.x.x address that is the one asigned by your ISP that is the problem. Most ISPs for domestic users asign a dynamic IP address. Static addresses can be used but you usually have to ask for it and pay extra. So make sure your router is configured to use DHCP from your ISP. It will also be acting as a DHCP server for you LAN which is a different thing. So your router is both a DHCP client and a DHCP server. Stuart

Reply: (edit)I have already signed up with my ISP for fixed/static ip service and I do pay extra for it. As I mentioned, my router works fine for the fixed ip, but it only for a while, and some dynamic IP will "invade" my router and taking control of it and my network can't go on net. All I need to do is to pull out the power cable and slot it back then it will works again. Since my router will automatically connect with preset username and password. The DHCP setting is as default setting, no changes so far. All I need to set my router to get it works right now is just predefine the static ip.

Reply: (edit)If your ISP has givien you a static IP and you have entered it into your modem then the only other thing it could be is that you need to disable something in the modem to disable DHCP on WAN side yet keep DHCP on the LAN side. Stuart
