Hello:
I have a D-Link DI604 ethernet router. It's currently functional, and the internet works fine. I am not that good with computers, and a friend recommended this website to me.
I would like to share files and play games with other computers connected to the router. I was wondering if this was possible, and if it is, how would I go about doing so? I hear about people sharing files and playing games over a network all of the time.
Thanks a ton,
Chris

to share files you will have to set up a network
if your using windows XP go into control panel, network connections, setup a small or home office network. follow the wizard, pretty easy. remember to select on both 'this computer connects directly to the internet'
do this on both computers, dont create a floppy disk
try that, it should explain itself but if you cant manage it, post back an we'll sort it

oh, to test if its worked go into my network places, view workgroup computers
you should see your 2 PC's

I've succesfully configured one of my computers for the network, but the second computer displays the following error message:
"An error occured during configuration of the network on this computer.
You can configure your network manually, or you can run the wizard again with different settings."
I'm running Windows XP Home on both computers, and while setting up the network, I selected "Other > This computer connects to the Internet directly or through a network hub. Other computers on my network also connect to the internet directly or through a hub." If the "Network Hub" is the router, I've selected the right one.
Thanks for the help,
Chris

that problem has popped up a lot with people trying to set up a network
my only advice is to check the workgroups, but thats already been suggested
have you tried going into my network places, computers near me
see whats there...

It's weird - whenever I open up the Start Menu, I cannot see "My Network Places". I tried searching for it, but there were no results.
In terms of the firewall, I have one running on each of my two PCs. I have ZoneAlarm running on one, and Norton Internet Security 2004 running on the other. I'm not really sure whether it's necessary to have these running because there is a setting for a Firewall on the router.
The firewalls sometimes "Block Intrusion Attempts", which may or may not have been the router connecting to the computer, I'm not sure. These happen once every few days, it seems.
Although it may be difficult to read, here are the "Firewall Rules". If you find them difficult to read, I can send you a screenshot, if you wish.
Action Name Source Destination Protocol
Allow Allow to Ping WAN port WAN,* LAN,192.168.0.1 ICMP,8
Allow msnmsgr (192.168.0.101:9689) 53 WAN,* LAN,192.168.0.101 UDP,9689-5349
Allow msnmsgr (192.168.0.101:9267) 65 WAN,* LAN,192.168.0.101 TCP,9267-65252
Deny Default *,* LAN,* IP (0),*
Allow Default LAN,* *,* IP (0),*Hope that helps, and thank-you for your asistance,
Chris

I just tried to configure the network again with both firewalls turned off, but it still didn't work.

To display My Network Places in the Start Menu, do this:
right click on start bar > properties > customize > advanced > scroll down start menu items and put a check in My Network Places and hit ok and apply.
Note: This will not work with the classic start menu! (If you are using the classic start menu, open up My Computer and click on the link to My Network Places under Other Places on the left hand side of the screen.)
Kevin

Thank-you Kevin for helping me in enabling My Network Places.
When in My Network Places, I do not see a section named "Computers Near Me". All that is there is "Network Setup Wizard", "Add Network Place" and "Entire Network".
I have tried browsing "Entire Network", but in "Microsoft Terminal Service" there is nothing that shows up, in "Web Client Network" I receive a message that I am
"Unable to browse the network.
The network is not present or not started".In "Microsoft WIndows Network", I see the Mshome workgroup, but when I click on it, I receive the following message:
"Mshome is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have network permissions.
The list of servers for this workgroup is currently not avalible".
I have tried running the Network Setup Wizard again, but it still isn't working. Adding a network place doesn't seem like the place to go, either.
The sidebar which usually shows up at the left of most windows has now disappeared.
Help would be greatly appreciated,
Chris

I was also having problems getting my two computers to see each other. Same situation, both running XP Home and through a D-link DI-604. Also had Zone Alarm running on both. However, once I turned Zone Alarm off everything was fine. Thanks all for the reminder.
One other question...
Is there a way to get both computers to see each other and leave Zone Alarm running? The router automatically assigns the IP's but they seem to stay pretty constant. One last thing, under Win 98 there used to be an executable I could access under the "Run" menu item by typing "winipconfig" however it doesn't seem to be available under XP Home. Anyone know of a similar tool included with XP Home? I miss that utility if you can believe it. :)

You can put an IP address range into Zone Alarm's Trusted Zone. To do this, go to firewall, then click on the zones tab click add and select IP range and put the range of IP addresses in so that Zone Alarm will allow that IP address to have access to that computer. You will have to do this on each computer. As an answer to your second question, I believe that winipconfig is equivalent to ipconfig, but I'm not exactly sure because I'm just starting to get into all this computer stuff so I've never used winipconfig. I know ipconfig can be typed in from the command prompt, and it may also be able to run via the "Run" menu. Ipconfig just basically gives you some IP information for your computer or if you type ipconfig /all it will give you the ip info on all the computers on your network.
