My modems output is through an RJ45 lan cable.
I'm just wondering if I can configure all 4 of my computers to access each other and the internet through the switch?
I had a quick try but failed.
I know I need to give each computer it's own ip but it's the default gateway I think is where I go wrong?
If I put only 1 computer on the switch and let it obtain ip automattically it connects to the internet.

Your switch doesn't provide NAT which the router did. Unless you have an IP (provided by your ISP) for each client PC, you won't be able to have them all access the internet setup just that way.
What you can do is hook one PC to the internet, put a second NIC in it and connect that to your LAN. Then setup ICS on that "host" PC to provide the NAT for your LAN.
However, the cost of a SOHO router isn't that much and it would be well worth your time to just buy a replacement. A SOHO router also comes with a firewall which means not having to setup firewalls on each individual PC.

Thanks Curt R for thr reply :)
I'll have a rout around for a new router then, any suggestions?
wireless would be nice.

You can buy a wireless SOHO router at most any computer store. Don't let them sell you an 802.11n though. The 11n is not yet a standard and that means there's no guarantee it'll work with your present wireless card(s).
Stick with B/G for now and you should be just fine.

Some of the less expensive models have at least some types of firewall feature. See if you can get one that at least promotes it and be sure to setup that feature.
I read it wrong and answer it wrong too. So get off my case you peanut.
