Hi guys,

I have recently moved and I'm connecting through my roomate's router. I own a Linksys wireless router (WRT54G or close, not sure). Anyway, what I would like is to use my router connected to his to act as an Access Point for my own need. His network is cables only and I'm the only one in the house with wireless cards. I've read on how to do this already, however I'm not 100% confident and I can't risk messing up his network as he use it for important business related topics.

So if possible how in detail do I do this? I've tried connecting my router and changing it's IP, however it still ask for a way to connect through the wan just over the section where I write the new IP, what do I put there?

Also once that's done and DHCP is disabled, how to I attach the Wireless router? LAN-WAN? I'm just guessing I take a lan port from the main router and run it to my wireless router WAN port? Would that be correct? or is it LAN2LAN port?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Connect a LAN port on your wireless router to an open port on his network infrastructure. Change the IP address on your wireless router. Give it an IP address on your friends subnet, and out of the range of his DHCP pool. Disable DHCP on your wireless router. That's all you need to do. All you are doing is daisy-chaining your router to his LAN. Your router won't be doing any routing, just switching.

Hi Matthew,

Thanks for the reply, how do I know the IP I specify is out of the DHCP pool? What if it isn't but I make sure it won't be ever given as there are a fixed ammount of clients.

Also I'm just wondering, how does LAN 2 LAN convert to wireless...is it because there's nothing plugged into the Wireless router WAN's port that it knows to act as a switch?

Ok now that didn't go well...which is probably my fault. I connected my router through a LAN port and changed it's IP to 192.168.0.200. I figured since I had an IP of 192.168.0.100 when connected to his router and that there's only 4 clients it wouldn't conflict.

I turned off the DHCP server on my router as well. I saved and lost connection to the router since it wasn't on that IP anymore...now when I try connecting on it though I get nothing :( I can't even change it back to what it was. I've tried the reset button which didn't do anything.

What do I do?

Hey,

Just a little update...I connected both router and it's working fine now. However I still have the problem of not knowing what it's IP is...what will I do when I need it to work as a router again? I can't get into the setting.

Thanks for the help.

Ugh, I'm so sorry for this, I should have check ed connection again before posting. I couldn't access the router before because I didn't have an IP from it since it was not giving me one. With my wireless connection enabled I can...stupid me.

Thanks Matthew
