Hi all,
I've just installed Vista Ultimate 64-bit and am having problem with my router talking to my pc. I thought the problem was to do with the ip address that vista assigned itself, but I've been into the IPv4 Properties and changed the settings so the IP comes from the router. Unfortunatley, after doing this it took 10 minutes for the Network to be found and then when I rebooted I got an exclamation icon over the network icon so it still didn't work.
Previously, I've unplugged the router from the wall (power) and waited a bit and then plugged it back in. Vista networks fine after that, and within a minute, but I reboot and get the same problem!
What do you think the problem is?
Any help appreciated.
Cheers

Well, negative comments about Vista aside....I would guess it sounds like your router is having problems.
If it were me, I'd check and see if there was a firmware update available for your router and there is, I'd apply it. If the problem went away then you know what the issue was. If it doesn't, I'd contact the support team by email or phone and explain the situation to them.
If you think it might be related to Vista, plug an XP system in and see if the same thing happens.

Cheers Curt R
I have XP Pro running along side it which is perfectly fine. It's def a software communication problem, the hardware is fine - all cables plugged in and in one piece, all the correct lights are on...etc etc.
I'll check firmware and see what is what.
Thanks

If xp works don't muddy the water with router firmware updates.
Looks to be Vista to me. Did you check the security/firewall settings?
How about basics like nic driver and cable swap?Knowing the correct answer and giving a correct answer, are two different things

Hi
Did all that....found the answer and am ashamed to say it was my fault....I have XP and Vista installed (on seperate partitions of course) and i gave them different computer names and had a static ip set on the router for that machine, so the router was randomly switching names and confusing itself and so it stopped working cause it couldn't decide which name to use.
I've changed the name now so they are the same and it works perfectly!
Cheers anyway.

It no longer works perfectly!
For some reason the windows vista install likes to give itself an ip similar to 169.254.78.210 whereas the router dishes out 192.168.0.x.
Go figure! If i unplug the router and plug it back in, it finds the network and so the router updates vista with the correct ip. It is as though vista isn't checking the network before jumping in and giving itself an IP address!!
I can also go to the network properties and change the ip to an ip thats within the range the router uses (192.168.0.x) but that doesn't work - so i change it back to autoconfig and hey presto, it refreshes it's connection with the router and gets an ip from it and works fine. This is doing my nut!
I tried to contact support, but even that doesn't work - they asked for my activation code (which is legit), i gave it, it was refused!
Help me please someone.
